Serán BioScience has been growing in Bend for years. Today, the company employs more than 200 people and continues to expand its campus near Empire Avenue, building on its established expertise in drug development and clinical manufacturing.

Serán is continuing that growth with a major expansion in Juniper Ridge. The company is developing a new commercial manufacturing campus with Mortenson that will ultimately include 100,000 square feet of new facilities. The investment will expand Serán’s capacity to support pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies from early-stage drug development through commercial production, while further strengthening Central Oregon’s growing life sciences sector.

For EDCO, supporting that growth has meant maintaining a close relationship with Serán and helping the company navigate the resources available to support continued investment in Bend.

One of the most significant examples is the Bend Enterprise Zone. EDCO worked with Serán on a new five-year Enterprise Zone agreement associated with several buildings on its expanding campus. The newest building is leased by Serán and was constructed specifically for the company, primarily supporting research, development and innovation along with office operations.

EDCO has also worked with Serán to maintain its Enterprise Zone participation, providing guidance on annual reporting, compliance requirements and ongoing program administration.

That relationship extends beyond the Enterprise Zone. Through regular business retention meetings, EDCO has stayed connected with Serán leadership to understand the company’s operations, workforce needs and plans for growth. EDCO has also provided information on workforce assistance, financing, expansion resources and state incentive programs as opportunities arise.

As Serán’s presence in Bend has grown, so has its connection to Central Oregon. EDCO has helped facilitate meetings with elected officials, including invitations to business roundtables. EDCO also organized a tour of Serán’s facility for Bend City Council members, giving local leaders an opportunity to see the company’s work firsthand and better understand the specialized operations taking place in their community.

Serán has in turn become an important voice for Central Oregon’s bioscience sector. Company leadership has participated in EDCO’s Annual Luncheon, helping showcase a growing industry that is bringing new investment and career opportunities to the region.

That growth is reflected in the scale of Serán’s new Juniper Ridge campus.

The new Juniper Ridge campus includes a 50,000 square foot cGMP manufacturing facility designed for oral solid dosage production. The facility will include specialized suites for processes such as spray drying, granulation, tableting, encapsulation and coating, along with laboratories, cold storage, purified water, nitrogen, automation and other infrastructure needed for commercial pharmaceutical manufacturing.

Two additional buildings totaling 50,000 square feet will support packaging, warehousing, materials management and supply chain operations. The new facilities will complement Serán’s existing 90,000-square-foot campus just minutes away.

The expansion will give Serán greater capacity to support clients from early drug development through commercial manufacturing, while adding another significant piece to Bend’s growing life sciences sector. For EDCO, the story is about more than helping a company access incentives. It is about staying engaged as Serán grows, helping connect the company to the people and resources it needs and supporting continued investment in a company that has become an important part of Central Oregon’s economy.
