Data Centers
With the construction of the new $188 million Facebook data center in Prineville and BendBroadband’s Vault project in Bend (both EDCO recruitment projects) we believe the region has some of the key mission critical components needed by the industry – affordable electric power, municipal water and sewer capacity, robust telecom infrastructure, affordable large-acreage industrial sites, ability to attract technical talent to operate data center facilities, and importantly, a climate that can significantly lower power usage.
Another critical component of competing for projects in this increasingly global industry are the region’s six Enterprise Zones that allow short to long-term property tax exemptions on the required massive capital investments. Combined with the critical infrastructure and siting requirements noted above, these incentive programs enable Central Oregon to be competitive nationally for projects. More and more electronic transactions, Internet activity, and computing capacity are being centralized in data centers, so the industry appears to be positioned for steady growth well into the future.
