EDCO's Industry Targets for Central Oregon Region
Some communities use the “shotgun” approach to business development – shoot at anything that flies and claim anything that falls. We prefer to focus our recruitment and marketing efforts on a select group of industries that are a good fit for the region, and the region a good fit for firms competing in that industry. These targets were developed through a detailed analysis of Central Oregon’s workforce, infrastructure, geographic location, transportation, and existing critical mass of companies, technologies, and growth trends.
From the region’s perspective, the most promising industries and sub-sectors were selected and measured by employment growth, average wages, sales growth, and capacity utilization of facilities (plant & equipment). Targeted industry efforts include assisting existing businesses as often the very best opportunities for job creation start with companies already operating here. Dominated by small employers, the region has a surprising breadth of skill, technology and sectors represented by our existing firms in aerospace, semiconductors, software, renewable energy and medical device. These sectors, however, are only a few companies “deep”. The goal of EDCO, its committees and industry working groups is to “deepen” the pool of companies in the form of new startups, relocations, and critical supply chain in each targeted industry.
